The Bio-Dome & The Oculus

Humans are not designed to live in rigid boxes. Nature speaks in curves, flows and organic geometries. The dome echoes this language, creating a subconscious sense of calm, safety and connection.

In most homes the ceiling is an afterthought: flat, silent and forgettable. At Nek Ha we chose to begin there — because one of the most important moments of the day happens the instant you wake up. Before movement, before thought, there is perception. You open your eyes, and what do you see? For many it is a white, flat surface. For us, that moment deserved more.

A ceiling designed as an experience

The Bio-Dome was conceived as a response to that question. Not just as a roof, but as a spatial and emotional catalyst: an architectural gesture that transforms how a home feels from the inside out. Instead of enclosing space, the dome expands it. Instead of flattening perception, it elevates it.

Through its curved geometry and vertical rise, the Bio-Dome introduces a sense of openness that goes beyond square metres. The height is not only physical, it is psychological. It creates breath, depth and a quiet sense of awe that redefines everyday living.

Layered intelligence: the anatomy of the Bio-Dome

The Bio-Dome is not a single element. It is a carefully engineered system of layers, each with a specific purpose, working together to achieve durability, comfort and beauty.

Layer 1 — Structural steel core. A reinforced steel structure anchors the dome to the residence, providing long-term stability and resistance in a tropical environment.

Layer 2 — Bamboo framework. A handcrafted bamboo structure gives the dome its organic form. Lightweight yet strong, bamboo allows for curvature, flexibility and a natural aesthetic that connects the interior to its surroundings.

Layer 3 — Henequen fibre mesh. A woven layer of henequen introduces texture, warmth and acoustic comfort. It softens sound, reduces echo and brings a tactile, human quality to the space.

Layer 4 — Thermal and waterproof coating. An exterior protective layer insulates from heat and protects from the elements, maintaining interior comfort throughout the day.

Crowning element — Reinforced glass oculus. At its apex, a hurricane-resistant glass skylight lets natural light enter from above, illuminating the space dynamically as the day evolves.

Bioclimatic performance, naturally achieved

The Bio-Dome is not only expressive, it is deeply functional. Its geometry supports natural ventilation and passive cooling, reducing the load on mechanical systems in a climate that punishes shortcuts.
